How To Measure Kilt Guide

Your kilt size is NOT your trouser size! To have your kilt fit your properly it’s really important to follow the steps below to get accurate sizes, so you can fully enjoy the liberating experience of wearing Scotland’s national dress. Hopefully this guide, along with our instructional video, will make this an easy process for you. It’s much easier if you can have someone take these measurements for you rather than try to take them yourself, so we advise getting someone to help.

  1. Your waist measurement should be taken at the height of your navel or bellybutton (not where you would wear your trousers/jeans/pants) You wear your kilt much higher, so your trouser size will probably result in your kilt being too small. Take this measurement firmly around the waist – too loose and you may find that your kilt is too big and will fall down!
  2. If you are confident with the measurements you can also provide your kilt length – this is from waist height (again kilt waist at belly button height and not trouser waist) to your knee. Kilts are worn with the bottom between the top and middle of the knee, so this is where you need to measure to. It’s VITAL that someone else takes this measurement for you, otherwise you will end up with a short kilt. Alternatively, we can use your height to judge your kilt length, so please provide an accurate overall height
  3. Your jacket size is the same as a typical jacket size – so if you have a suit or sports jacket you can provide this size. If not, take the measurement around the fullest part of your chest. Unlike the kilt, this measurement should not be tight, just a snug fit. The Price Charlie jacket is a neat fit, so typically go up one size for the best fit.
  4. Other sizes we require are your shoe size (UK size please) and if you require a shirt then your collar size (this is just a typical collar size from any shirt) If you need to take this measurement then it should be taken loosely around the Adam’s apple.

So, in summary, we require the following sizes from you

  • Kilt waist
  • Kilt Length (optional)
  • Accurate Overall Height
  • Jacket or chest size
  • UK shoe size
  • Collar size (if you require a shirt)
